John Type introduces the Vinyl Pitch Shifting technique with Ableton Push 3 standalone and the prototype of Vinyl Synth, discovering a new method for performing MidiTablism techniques in a computer-free setup with analog turntables and mixers.
What is MidiTablism?
MidiTablism is the use of MIDI sequencers in Turntablism, a method that allows you to perform multiple operations during routines. For example: while the sequencer is triggering cue points, or while the pitch of the turntable is being sequenced, in the meantime the hands are free to perform scratching or other techniques.
Description of the video performance
The melody of “Blow Your Head” is played live with the Vinyl Synth, then it is programmed in the sequencer to transform it into the arpeggio of “Positif”, a sound that is also used in “RATATA” with the vocal sampling of “Work It”.
Definition of “Morphing”
Like “mixing” in DJing and “scratching” in Turntablism, the term “morphing” defines DJ transitions performed with the techniques of MidiTablism and Vinyl Synthesis.
Vinyl Synth
The vinyl record used in the video is designed in dual mono, so it contains two different sounds between the left and right channels, to follow the features of a dual oscillator synth. The vinyl was cut in Italy by Vinilificio and will soon be available in a Limited Edition with various Vinyl Synthesis presets, compatible with Ableton Live 11 and Push 3 Standalone, which will allow you to change the sounds of this vinyl such as a synthesizer. Vinyl Pitch Shifting
John Type introduces the use of a pitch shifter to change the pitch of a vinyl record played on an analog turntable. The pitch shifter used in the video is the Ableton Shifter which responds to incoming MIDI notes. This is a new way to play Melodic Turntablism without MIDI turntables or DVS softwares.
What is a pitch shifter?
The pitch shifter is a digital audio effect that has the ability to change the pitch of an audio signal, in note intervals such as semitones or octaves.
How Vinyl Pitch Shifting works in the video
1. A turntable and analog mixer play a vinyl record with a continuous sound in the note of C.
2. The mixer’s audio output is plugged straight into the Push 3’s audio interface inputs.
3. Inside Push 3 is an audio effect called Shifter which is the same plugin in Ableton Live 11.
4. The Shifter can change the pitch of any audio signal in real time.
5. The Shifter responds to MIDI notes to select the pitch of the sound.
6. The MIDI notes to the Shifter are programmable with a sequencer so you can use it for MidiTablism.
7. The sound pitched by the Shifter is finally processed in a Vinyl Synthesis Instrument Rack.

Vinyl Pitch Shifting is possible without Ableton Push 3 standalone?
Yes, all you need is a computer with Ableton Live 11 Standard / Suite, an audio interface and any midi controller.
Difference between Melodic Turntablism techniques
PLATTER PLAY: the pitch change operate in a mechanical way, possible only with MIDI turntables such as Vestax Controller One, Vestax PDX-3000 and Reloop RP-8000.
TONE PLAY: melodies are played by triggering cue points on notes recorded on audio files, works on digital players such as CDJ, DVS and DJ controllers.
PITCH PLAY: Similar to Tone Play but uses a single cue point that is pitched by a pitch shifting algorithm on pre-loaded audio files in DVS and DJ controller softwares including Serato, Rekordbox, Traktor, etc.
VINYL PITCH SHIFTING: The pitch of the audio signal is changed in real time with a pitch shifter without the need for pre-loaded audio files, so you can play it on vinyl with analog turntables and mixers.

All’inizio il synth di “Blow Your Head” è suonato dal vivo con il Vinyl Synth, poi viene programmato nel sequencer per trasformarsi nel synth di “Positif”, suono che è viene usato anche in “RATATA” con al campionamento delle voci di “Work It”.
Definizione di “Morphing”
Come il “mixing” nel DJing e lo “scratching” nel Turntablism, il termine “morphing” definisce le transizioni eseguite con le tecniche di MidiTablism e Vinyl Synthesis.
Vinyl Synth
Il disco utilizzato nel video è realizzato in dual mono, ovvero contiene due suoni differenti tra canale sinistro e destro, per ricalcare le caratteristiche di un synth a doppio oscillatore. Il vinile è stato inciso in Italia da Vinilificio e prossimamente sarà disponibile in Serie Limitata con vari presets di Vinyl Synthesis, compatibile con Ableton Live 11 e Push 3 Standalone, che permetterà di cambiare i suoni di questo vinile come se fosse un sintetizzatore. Il pitch shifter utilizzato nel video è lo Shifter di Ableton che ha la funzionalità di essere controllato tramite note MIDI. Un nuovo modo per suonare il Melodic Turntablism senza giradischi MIDI o software DVS.
Che cos’è un pitch shifter?
Il pitch shifter è un effetto audio digitale che ha la facoltà di cambiare l’intonazione di un segnale audio, in intervalli di nota come quelli dei semitoni oppure delle ottave, tramite segnali di controllo tra cui quelli MIDI.
Funzionamento del Vinyl Pitch Shifting nel video
1. Giradischi e mixer completamente analogici riproducono un vinile con un suono continuo in nota di Do.
2. L’uscita audio del mixer è collegata direttamente agli ingressi della scheda audio del Push 3.
3. All’interno del Push 3 c’è un effetto audio che si chiama Shifter che è lo stesso di quello di Ableton Live 11.
4. Lo Shifter può cambiare l’intonazione di qualsiasi segnale audio in tempo reale.
5. Lo Shifter risponde alle note MIDI per definire la tonalità in cui vogliamo trasporre il nostro suono.
6. Le note MIDI verso lo Shifter sono programmabili con un sequencer quindi lo si può usare per il MidiTablism.
7. Il suono modificato dallo Shifter è infine processato in un Vinyl Synthesis Instrument Rack.

Sì, basta avere un computer con Ableton Live 11 Standard / Suite, una scheda audio e un qualsiasi controller midi.
Differenza tra le tecniche di Melodic Turntablism
PLATTER PLAY: il cambio d’intonazione avviene in maniera meccanica, possibile solo con giradischi MIDI come il Vestax Controller One, Vestax PDX-3000 e il Reloop RP-8000.
TONE PLAY: le melodie vengono suonate tramite il triggering di cue point su note registrate su file audio, eseguibile su player digitali come CDJ, DVS e DJ controller.
PITCH PLAY: simile al Tone Play ma si avvale di un singolo cue point che viene pitchato da un algoritmo di pitch shfting su file audio pre-caricato nei programmi per DVS e DJ controller tra cui Serato, Rekordbox, Traktor, ecc.
VINYL PITCH SHIFTING: L’intonazione del segnale audio è modificato in tempo reale con un pitch shifter senza la necessità file audio pre-caricati, quindi è possibile eseguirla su vinile con giradischi e mixer completamente analogici.
